Glass and Wood

Please see below examples of artist's work. If you'd like to know more about current pieces we have of each artist's work, please contact the gallery.

Martin Andrews

Martin Andrews is one of the UK’s leading glassmakers. He specialises in blown vessels and his work is known for its high quality, attention to fine detail, innovative surface treatments and design.

His inspiration comes from the natural world, particularly water and organic sea forms. Using the qualities that the molten glass holds and its many transitional states of fluidity, transparency or opacity, Martin attempts to capture a moment in time.

He has continued to develop his contemporary glass over the last twelve years. His work has been exhibited internationally, in Germany, USA, Japan, Canada and all over the UK. He has also worked on commissions for hotels and offices, architectural projects, film and television companies, corporate awards and restoration work.

Each piece is designed and handmade using the finest crystal glass. As they are made individually no two items are ever the same.

Malcolm Sutcliffe

Located in Cornwall, Malcolm designs and makes all his own glass assisted by his wife Jean. His designs are based on the natural world.

All the glass is free blown, no moulds are used to shape the glass; only wet newspaper, wooden blocks and the traditional glassmakers tools. His bowls, vases, dishes and plates have clean, smooth, simple shapes. The decoration is achieved by sandblasting through the layers of colour in the glass and finally the pieces are polished which enhances the colours and results in a silky sheen to the finished pieces.

Malcolm's glassware is collected worldwide and represented in various art galleries and museum collections.

Mark Hancock

Delicate and with a difference. That is how Mark Hancock's work has been described and it is the reason he was commissioned by the UK Government in 1998, has work included in private collections worldwide and exhibits at prominent galleries. His hollow turned vessels are thin walled, of a simple flowing form and enhanced by carving away the rim which adds life and movement to these sculptural pieces. Mark also turns more traditional bowls with beautiful attention given to the fine art of turning.

Philippine Sowerby

Jigsaw Puzzles by Philippine are made in a variety of Welsh hardwood, naturally finished to enhance their beauty and wonderfully tactile. Limited editions largely of country scenes and animals. Each one is designed, cut carved, polished and signed by the artist. They are for grown ups who love nature and who like a mental challenge; for collectors and to give as special presents.

Philippine trained as a civil engineer in Cardiff and her mathematical and design skills are apparent in the intricacy of the puzzles which present a challenge for her to design and cut as well as for purchasers to assemble. A kingfisher turns into a trout. An ammonite rises in an unbroken spiral through a single piece of wood. Two undulating layers of interlocking fish lurk beneath a handcarved trout. 12 swans take flight from the water. A snail hides in an abstract set of trails.

Each piece is cut from a single piece of wood and finished to emphasise its natural beauty. Philippine draws inspiration and her raw material from the landscape around her workshop and home in the Brecon Beacons.
