Claude Flight Prints

Claude Flight (1881 - 1955) Limited Edition Fine Art Prints

Walter Claude Flight was born in London and after schooling had a variety of jobs including working in an engineer's office, a library and on a farm. He enrolled at Heatherley's School of Fine Art in 1915 and whilst there met his first wife Clare. In the First World War he served as an officer in France and fell in love with all things French. Divorced from Clare, he returned to London in 1922 and married Edith Lawrence, already an established artist working with a range of media including linocuts. Flight himself then began to explore linocuts and this became his principal medium. Flight was influenced by the Futurists' ideas and suggested that the linocut should be the medium of choice because it did not carry the baggage of a tradition. He taught at the Grosvenor School, London between 1926 and 1930 and after that at the cave he had purchased in France, where the pupils included Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews.

During the Second World War the couple lived initially in London but later escaped to Wiltshire to avoid the bombing. His studio there was bombed and all of his lino printing blocks were destroyed.
